'Perception of PDP, BJP among people not good' | Baig speaks the truth | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 11: PDP ideologue and founder member Muzaffar Hussain Baig doesn't mince words. He says what he wants to say without fear and favour. He is sophisticated and also blunt. He has the courage of conviction and he expresses his views in public. Baig had on several occasions criticized the style of functioning of the Mufti Government and various PDP ministers and had even said that the PDP leadership didn't take him on board when the PDP-BJP agenda of alliance was prepared. He had also repeatedly said that the PDP will become unpopular in the Valley if it failed to feel the Kashmiri pulse. Baig took the same line after the demise of Mufti Sayeed. Baig, who became more vocal after January 7 and spoke for and on behalf of the party several times after his meetings with party president Mehbooba Mufti, the other day again did some plain-speaking and asserted that the perception of the PDP and the BJP among the people have not been good. Actually, he gave an important interview to the leading national daily, The Economic Times. Terming Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's demise as a "tragedy", Lok Sabha MP and senior PDP leader Baig said that the Mufti's demise provided an opportunity for PDP to make a fresh start and that he also was hopeful that Mehbooba Mufti will do better than her late father. "Mufti's death is a challenge for us, but also an opportunity for PDP to get a fresh start. You know, I am an insider critic, not a dissenter because I want the government to succeed and I want the alliance to succeed," he said, adding "I told Mufti sahib to his face that how can we be the party of good governance if some of our governors, that is administrators, are not good?" Baig even went to the extent of saying that the perception of PDP among the people had not been good. "The perception of PDP among the people in the last couple of years has not been good. Some ministers in the government are newcomers, they are arrogant, they don't know the cadres, they don't know who their voters are, they are contemptuous of the cadres. This has to change," Baig said without mincing words. Interestingly, Baig said the same thing for the BJP. He added "The BJP, too, must improve its stock in Jammu, otherwise they too will fall. This is a time for alliance partners to stop playing games". What Baig said during his interview to The Economic Times was very, very significant. He not only advised the PDP's top gun to refashion the party's whole approach towards the people of Kashmir and issues concerning governance, but also predicted a doom for the BJP. It would not be an exaggeration if one may says so that Baig indirectly asked the PDP and the BJP to pursue their respective agenda independent of each other. In other words, he implicitly expressed himself against the PDP-BJP alliance. |
