Kishtwar Jan 20: "Cleanliness is next to godliness", a slogan now confined to papers, but merely in paper's, but few youths in Kishtwar proven this in reality through its initiative--- an initiative towards cleaning its locality. A few youth s from Kishtwar have proven the wisdom in this saying.
Kishtwar Municipality is spread over 13 wards faces shortage of funds and staff. It is short of Saffie Karamchari and as a consequence heaps of garbage are seen across the town.
When the Municipal employees went on strike in 2013, the Kishtwar youths took the initiative for developing civic sense among the people. living in the said locality.
The initiative which was jointly taken by Tehseen Ahmed Waza, a local resident along with his friend Towsif Mustafa Wani, a resident of Rehalthal Chatroo who was living in the locality since the past last over 20 years in a rented accommodation.
A Village Level Worker by profession, Tehseen Ahmed Waza while justifying the award given to him by the state in 2011 for successful implementation of National Rural Sanitation Mission in Panchayat Kwar (Block Nagsini) of Kishtwar District took the lead to motivate his other friends Mustafa Wani, an Excise Inspector by profession and the duo decided to involve the youths of the locality to clear the heaps of garbage lying in the locality.
Initially the duo was disappointed by non-participation of the locals. But when both picked up brooms in their hands, others followed suit. The new participants included a local storekeeper Akther Hussain Dev and others. They not only started cleaning the local streets, but also purchased brooms, buckets, dustbins for the purpose out of their own pocket and soon the locality witnessed a massive change in terms of cleanliness of the area. They also took few neighbors to task for throwing garbage on streets.
They also purchased uniform for Municipality sweeper, provided him a whistle. Every morning when the sweeper comes, he blows the whistle and every individual house hold comes out and put the garbage in a municipality waste carrier.
They also prepared boards and installed them at different locations with an appeal to general public and the neighbors to maintain cleanliness in the locality.
He said that the locality is the hub of schools and coaching institutes and thousands of students use the street to reach schools every day and said that since last three years people of the locality has taken a sign of relief, beside the burden on municipality committee employees posted in the area had also been reduce.
"Let people of Kishtwar understand the importance of maintaining cleanliness," said Tehseen Waza.
