HM militant killed in encounter at Naina-Batapora in Pulwama | Subsequent protests lead to death of one civilian | | Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, Jan 20: A youth got killed in the firing of police and security forces in the Naina Batapora village of South Kashmir's Pulwama district. The death occurred after police and security forces fired upon protesters at the culmination of an encounter in the village. Reports said that people mostly youth came out in groups and protested against police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel as soon as the encounter ended. As the forces failed in controlling the situation they opened fire leading to the death of a civilian and injuries to two others. The situation is tense in the area and protests were going on in against the killing of the youth. Police lobbed dozens of smoke shells on people who protested against the killing of the civilian identified as Parvez Ahmad Guroo. Reinforcements have been rushed to the area to control the situation and the whole area is very tense. A police spokesman said that on January 19 based on specific information about the presence of militants in Naina, Pulwama police along with army and CRPF launched a cordon-search operation. During the operation, militants opened indiscriminate fire on the security forces which was retaliated. "During the ensuing encounter more than 50 civilians who had got entrapped due to cross firing in a nearby mosque were rescued safely by the Pulwama police. In the gun battle, one dreaded militant of HM outfit got killed. The slain militant was later identified as Shariq Ahmed Bhat resident of Brow Bandana, Awantipora," said the police spokesman. The spokesman said that during the operation, a large number of rioters came towards operation site and pelted stones on the security forces. He said the security forces exercised maximum restraint and 17 security forces personnel got injured- including Nazir Ahmed Ganai, DySP of 18 Bn. IRP who sustained multiple fractures in his leg. A police vehicle was also set ablaze by the unruly mob. "During the uncontrolled rioting, three rioters got firearm injuries, out of which, one Parvez Ahmed Guroo resident of Naina later succumbed to his injuries. The condition of other two rioters is said to be stable. Case FIR No. 10/16 and 11/16 stand registered in PS Pulwama and investigation is on," said the spokesman. Giving details about the operation army said that one militant was today gunned down in an encounter with the joint team of Army, CRPF and JKP in Pulwama district. "Continuing its relentless operations against the militants the security forces yesterday launched an operation in Naina village in South Kashmir's Pulwama district on receiving information about the presence of some militants," said an army spokesman. The spokesman said that as the forces closed in, they drew heavy volume of fire from the militants hiding in the village leading to a fierce gun battle which resulted in the elimination of one militant identified as Shariq Ahmad Bhat aged 20 years son of Abdul Rashid Bhat resident of Pulwama. One AK 47 Rifle and some other war like stores have been recovered from the encounter site, he said. |
