Has BJP surrendered everything? | | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 20: As the stage is set for PDP-BJP to form the coalition government again in Jammu and Kashmir a million dollar question that is haunting one and all is whether BJP has surrendered some portfolios and the post of the deputy chief minister. At the time when the coalition was confronted with the tough times the PDP set clear conditions before its alliance partner BJP to continue with the coalition, the PDP's demand of 'No Deputy CM post' made headlines at that time. Though the speculations continued for over a period of time, at present both the sides are silent. Such a silence is giving rise to the reports of whether BJP has agreed to surrender deputy CM's post and other key portfolios in a bid to remain in the government for the next five years. Pertinently, days after the demise of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, BJP and PDP were renegotiating the terms of their alliance. BJP had asked the PDP chief to agree on 'rotational chief ministership' for Jammu and Kashmir, which was rejected by Mehbooba. Mehbooba, instead, had demanded removal of the deputy chief minister's post and handing over of some key ministries to PDP to continue the alliance. Meanwhile, both BJP and the PDP haven't revealed before the press that conditions on which the alliance would be based. Who will get what is also being kept as the top secret. When Early Times tried to contact some PDP leaders, it was revealed that the party hasn't reached to that level of discussions yet. Pertinently, BJP during late Mufti's tenure had Power, Irrigation and Flood control, Forest and Health portfolios with itself along with the post of the deputy chief minister. J&K is under Governor's rule since January 8 as Mehbooba, who was supposed to take oath as first woman CM of the state, declined to do so till end of the mourning period. Speculations were also ripe that Congress was offering an olive branch to Mehbooba Mufti ahead of the oath taking ceremony of the PDP chief as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Union minister Nitin Gadkari, on January 10, met Mehbooba Mufti at her residence in Srinagar and condoled the death of her father late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. |
