Surinsar narrates a sordid tale of official neglect | | | Kunal Shrivatsa
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 20: Woefully belying the tall claims of the successive governments to improve tourist infrastructure in Jammu, Surinsar lake narrates a sordid tale of neglect and apathy of authorities. Surinsar- one of the most significant tourist spots which is only 40 kilometers from Jammu has potential of becoming a tourism hub due to its proximity with Jammu, but government apathy has left the place bereft of basic amenities imperative to improve tourist foot fall. The road to Surinsar from Jammu and Udhampur is in dilapidated condition at several points offering tourists a bumpy ride at various places particularly about 4-5 kilometres of road stretch leading up to the lake itself. The dusty road is not only a big source of pollution for the lake but it is also a health hazard for the visitors to the place, the locals residing nearby as well as the shopkeepers running different trades. Lack of quality food at Surinsar irks the tourists as only a few shabby, unhygienic eateries dot the spot to their disappointment. The tragedies of a potential tourist place like Surinsar do not end here since a restaurant leased out by the Tourism Department to a private operator on contract for three years has failed to provide an alternate to whatever being offered by small time eating joints and tea stalls. Though the restaurant in the name and style of 'Lake View Hotel and Restaurant', which has the bright prospect of getting developed as a better option for the tourists to have quality food, is almost lying defunct as noticed by this scribe and his photographer during their visit to Surinsar on January 19. Upon reaching Surinsar at about 5 pm, both the Early Times staffers thought of taking some light snacks. The duo enquired from a shopkeeper who told them that they would easily get food items at the restaurant but to their astonishment when they entered the premises nobody was there to attend to their need. "Who would come to Surinsar when there is no proper arrangement for food and other eatables…The only restaurant running on contract has failed to meet to the demands of the people visiting here…The visitors hardly spend their time here… The government should take necessary steps in order to attract visitors and ensuring their longer stay here," said a shopkeeper, Kaka Ram. |
