MC Pahalgam dumps solid waste in Forest land illegally, department in slumber

Anantnag, Jan 20: Against the laws, Municipal committee Pahalgam continues to dump solid waste in Forest area at this famed tourist destination from last over ten years, resulting hazards impact on the fragile environment.
However, despite having knowledge of the same, Forest department hasn't initiated any step to stop the civic body from continuing this serious anti-environment activity because of which many pine trees have dried up.
The civic body-Municipal Committee Pahalgam-has dumped and piled up tones of solid garbage around Tulyan Nullah which finally joins Lidder River which is main source of drinking water to over 50 villages of Anantnag district.
Locals say that the practice of dumping solid waste on forest land and around water is making hazardous impact. "Many trees have dried up due to the garbage while as it pollutes the river Lidder which can be origin to several deadly diseases as river Lidder main sources of drinking water to Anantnag district," Rayees Ahmad, a local resident told Early Times.
He said that garbage piled up by Municipal committee Pahalgam is giving difficult times to visitors and particularly to those visiting shrine of Hazrat Zain-u-Din Wali (RA) at Sarbal. "Worshipers and visitors often visit the shrine but on seeing the heaps of garbage they are left dishearten," he added. Civic body officials maintain that they have got the project approved for disposing off the garbage but hasn't identified the land. Locals contest the claims of civic body and accused them of fooling people, environmentalist and other organizations who raise voice against the environment plundering by the Municipal committee. "We have got the project approved is their only answer," locals said. Divisional Forest officer Lidder, when contacted said that the civic body will dispose off the garbage within fifteen days. "Recently when the issue was highlighted we wrote to them (Muncipal comiteee Pahlagm) after which they assured us that they will remove the garbage within fifteen days," he said, however was not clear how much days since the civic body gave him assurance for removing the garbage.
He said that the civic body was dumping the garbage around Tulyan Nallah from last over ten years. "They are identifying the land for the dumping site," he claimed.
Pertinently, the sewage is dumped in the area violating at least four laws - Forest Conservation Act 1980, Environment Protection Act 1986, Public Liability Act 1991 and Biological Diversity Act 2002.
