Early Times Report
Udhampur, Jan 20: Road accidents in district Udhampur have claimed hundreds of lives with equal number of injured in last nine months, thanks to the casual approach being adopted by the authorities at the helm of affairs.
Overloading, poor road network and plying of condemned passenger vehicles are the main reasons for frequent road accidents in this mountainous region of the district.
Inhabitants of hilly villages like Gordi, Latti, Basanthgarh, Panchari, Mongri, Kanthgali, Marooti and etc claimed that poor and bad connectivity is the root cause of the fatal road accidents.
Locals also alleged that also said that the peripheral roads linking the uptown and upper reaches in mountainous regions of district are badly damaged since long but all complaints in this regard are falling into deaf ears of the authorities till date.
"Many times we approached Public Work Department (PWD) for due repair of these roads but our repeated requests yield nothing," lamented a villager of Latti.
Locals pin pointed that many road accidents have taken place in the last nine months in peripheral areas including an accident at Latti-Maroothi road last year in which 24 persons were killed and other 50 injured.
Citing examples of various accidents, the locals lamented that in a similar road tragedy at Ramnagar-Dalsaarh road 14 were killed in a mini-bus accident while at Panchari mishap of TATA-207 make vehicle claimed four lives. Seven precious lives were lost in Dubhi Galhi Panchari bus accident in the year 2014 while recently in a road mishap at Keya in Ramnagar Basantgarh-Ramnagar resulted in loss of 11 lives and injuries to 32 others.
"The accidents at these roads continue as a routine affair but the authorities virtually have failed to take any action and learning a lesson and undertaking due repair the bad roads resulting into fatal accident, they said, adding, "overloading in vehicles is another reason for the road mishaps in this area."
"We have brought this into the notice of traffic regulating authorities many times but they appear only on few occasions on road and challan few vehicles and vanish away in nowhere within no time," said Vishal a collegiate.
He further said that the transport department and traffic authorities never pay heed towards meanace of overloading.
Meanwhile senior Panthers Party leader and ex-minister Harsh Dev Singh talking to Early Times said if PWD has repaired and managed maintenance of the link roads timely with traffic and transport departments checking the overloading and rash driving properly only than fatal road accidents can be controlled.
