Atmosphere in JU also like Hyderabad University; Governor must remove VC | NSF condemns harassment of scholars, students | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 20: Expressing solidarity with the protesting students and scholars of Hyderabad University, the National Secular Forum (NSF) today raised the issue of harassment of the scholars and students in University of Jammu (JU) at the hands of the varsity administration. Addressing a press conference here today, NSF senior vice president Surjit Choudhary said that Rohit Vemula, a scholar of Hyderabad University, committed suicide after being harassed and suspended by the Vice Chancellor. "The poor scholar was put under lot of pressure by the University administration and was left with no other option other than to commit suicide which is highly unfortunate," he expressed. Choudhary demanded stern action against the people who harassed the scholar and led him to the death. Drawing parallel to the harassment of Rohit, the NSF senior vice president also raised the similar kind of harassment being meted out to the students and scholars of the Jammu University at the hands of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ramji Dass Sharma. Choudhary mentioned that the JU Vice Chancellor suspended five scholars and three students without any concrete reason and the decision was aimed at harassing the students and scholars so as to make them to toe his line. "The Vice Chancellor is behaving like a dictator and trying to impose his decision on the poor students and scholars and also playing with their career which is highly condemnable and unjust," he said. He apprehended Hyderabad University like incident could take place in Jammu University as well "and if any such incident occurs here, the entire responsibility would be Vice Chancellor and Governor of the state (who is Chancellor of the University)," he added. "We have taken up the issue of students' harassment with the Chancellor on several occasions but he has failed to take cognizance of the matter which has escalated the things further," he added. Choudhary appealed the Union HRD Ministry to intervene in the matter and remove Prof Ramji Dass from the position of Vice Chancellor. Among those who were present in the press-conference included, Narinder Singh, Abhishek Bhagat, Suraj Kumar, and Atul Sharma. |
