Fearing protests over JNU issue Rahul forced to cancel Jammu visit | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 29: Apprehensions of possible protests by Sangh Parivar outfits forced Congress national vice-president Rahul Gandhi to cancel his proposed visit of Jammu this week. Notwithstanding all out efforts of PCC president G A Mir, Rahul Gandhi preferred to avoid visiting Jammu in the wake of reports that Sangh Parivar outfits may create trouble during his visit here by holding protest demonstrations over the issue of JNU. According to the sources in Congress circles, Rahul Gandhi has started realizing that the controversy over JNU issue following alleged anti-India demonstration on the campus and his attempt to take the lead in support of `freedom to expression' has damaged his own reputation thus taking him to backfoot. The situation was apparently used by the Azad faction to indirectly convey the high command that the time was not right for Rahul Gandhi to visit Jammu where general sentiments of masses are in support of nationalist forces and against the so called champions of freedom to expression, who glorified Afzal Guru and Azadi to Kashmir. Since the PCC had planned to organize a public meeting of Rahul Gandhi at Maharaja Hari Singh Park on the banks of Tawi river, there were intelligence inputs that some Sangh Parivar outfits may use this opportunity for registering protests over JNU episode and thus create embarrassment for the Congress, sources explained. Even as PCC president G A Mir was hopeful of Rahul's visit, sources said all Congressmen in Jammu has taken a sigh of relief over cancellation of the visit, which could have only brought trouble to the party here. |
