NC-Geelani war of words worsens | | | Hyder Ali ET Report srinagar, Feb 29: Amid speculations that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) are inching closer towards Government formation, a festering war of words has erupted between the National Conference and Hurriyat-G Chairman Syed Ali Geelani. The NC is again openly crying that Hurriyat-G supports PDP, while Geelani accused the former of playing "vote bank politics". As of now the Hurriyat- G and the NC are at daggers drawn, trying to strip each other in public. After some statements by Geelani against the Abdullahs, the latter spewed venom against the former. And, there's no end to this. In the latest, Hurriyat-G issued a formal statement against the Abdullahs. The separatist party said (NC) president Dr Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah were playing "vote bank politics" by making "sweet talks." "Whenever National Conference is out of power they suddenly start to remember the State's autonomy and the betrayal of India and also start to talk about the friendship with Pakistan and the resolution of Kashmir. But when they are in the Government, they not only hate to talk about the word autonomy but Farooq Abdullah also suggest India to attack PaK and occupy that region too," Hurriyat (G) spokesperson Ayaz Akbar said in a statement. The Hurriyat statement came in reaction to NC spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu's allegations that Geelani is hypocrite who supports the PDP-BJP alliance and issues statements on their dictations. "Geelani should introspect and put his house in order as his close aides were in close contact with PDP-BJP coalition leaders and were issuing partisan statements in lieu of political and financial favors," Mattu said. "The irony is that when the people of Kashmir are united in their overwhelming opposition to the unholy PDP-BJP alliance, Geelani seems to have taken upon himself the mantle of diverting attention and public wrath from PDP's previous sellout and its next imminent sellout by issuing prejudiced and factually incorrect statements against National Conference," Mattu said in a statement. He said Geelani issues statements on instructions from his handlers in the PDP. "Geelani Sahab's spokesman, in his copy-paste statement apparently received from Fairview Gupkar (Mehbooba's residence), clearly and conveniently skipped the fact that National Conference passed a resolution in the Legislative Assembly in 2000 seeking the restoration of Internal Autonomy with two-thirds majority," the NC Spokesperson added. Mattu said in the yesteryears had Geelani as the then MLA supported the mission of NC founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, the "constitutional erosions made in the State's special status at the behest of New Delhi could have been prevented." Last year the allegations of PDP-Geelani "secret pact" came to light when the pro-Pakistan hawk was allowed to hold a massive rally outside his residence which is barely a few hundred meters away from the Police Headquarters here. Political analysts had been saying that Geelani was strategically allowed to hold the rally only to send a notion that the PDP-BJP alliance was not denying space to separatist sentiment. But supporters of other parties like JKLF said they were denied any such space by the then PDP-BJP alliance. |
