| Commuters face apathy of PWD for bad roads | | |  Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 16: Most of the roads under the control of Public Works Department falling in Urban and Rural areas of the State are in a very dilapidated condition with most of the roads having not been repaired for years together despite availability of funds for roads maintenance making them worthless for plying vehicles and daily commuters.
The sources informed Early Times that the road from Airport to R.S.Pura has developed big potholes ruts and since a pretty long time the repair of the road has not been taken up by the Department making road users to face a tough time while driving their vehicles, further said, adding that due to non-maintenance of the road, the commuters are vulnerable to accidents especially the two wheelers while avoiding ruts and potholes. Anil Kumar R/o Miran Sahib informed that he had a narrow escape few days ago while driving his two wheeler on this road when a car driver hit him while escaping potholes. He said that the journey of half an hour is covered in hours due to indifferent attitude of the PWD to regularly maintain the roads.
Insider of Public Works Department pleading anonymity informed that every year crores of rupees is provided under Head 3054 of State Govt Special Repair and Maintenance for the Department to repair roads furher added, saying that the number of roads needing repair in the State may be more vis-à-vis the allotment the funds which are not judiciously spent for repair of roads as neither any priority for repair of road is fixed for obvious reasons nor is there any well placed mechanism in the Department to oversee the execution of work on the ground as per requirement. He said that instead of repairing the ruts and potholes, kachha work is generally carried out on the roads which does not come within the ambit of measurement, further informed, adding that strong nexus between the departmental officers and contractors has been instrumental for bad roads and if the funds allotted road-wise for regular repair are used in a befitting manner with close watch, the condition of the roads can be comparatively much better than the present deplorable one.
While flaying the slogan of development loudly chanted by the BJP during election and after formation of the govt last year, the sources rued saying that all the hopes of the public were dashed to ground during ten months tenure on the development front given the present conditions of the roads what to talk of other areas awaiting development, he lamented. They said that a thorough probe can unearth the scandal for putting a lid on misuse of public money and the present dispensation headed by Governor has rekindled the hopes of the public in view of latest significant decisions taken of public importance within a short span of over two months and urged that Governor shall take cognizance in this behalf in the larger interest of the public of the State. |
