'Separatist' KEA wants Jaitley to look beyond financial package | | | Early Times Report jammu, Mar 16: While PDP leaders like Muzzaffar Hussain Beigh and Naeem Akhtar have welcomed Union Finance Minister Arun Jailtley's Monday's Parliament statement that the Union Government would walk an extra mile to ensure equitable development of all the three regions of the State and described it a "positive" gesture, the Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) has urged the Union Government to look beyond the financial aspect and address the political issue the people of Kashmir hold very dear. Hailing Arun Jaitley's statement that New Delhi was "ready to walk an extra mile" for Jammu and Kashmir, founder member of the PDP and MP Muzaffar Hussain Baig on Tuesday said that the statement "would have a positive impact on Government formation in the State". As for Naeem Akthar, he -- apart from terming the Jaitley's statement as "positive" -- also referred to what he called "peculiar" problems facing the State. "Jammu and Kashmir faces peculiar problems and needs a different approach from Government of India to tackle these problems. In that context we welcome the steps as it is good to talk about development of the State and fulfilling the commitments," Akthar was quoted as saying. However, the Kashmir-based business community batted for something more than what Jaitley hinted at. "It is a step from the Central Government towards realizing the plight of people of Jammu and Kashmir," Chairman of KEA, Muhammad Yaseen Khan, was quoted as saying. He added that "We presume that walking an extra mile means that the prevailing political uncertainty in the State would be addressed". In other words, he spoke the language of Kashmiri separatists and urged the Union Government to resolve the so-called Kashmir issue. The KEA not only talked about the political aspect but it also urged the Union Government to hand over the NHPC-controlled and run power projects to the State Government and withdraw the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. "We demand power projects be returned, draconian laws like Disturbed Areas Act and AFSPA be done away with, security forces be made more accountable, and adequate financial assistance be extended without considerations and bias," the KEA chairman was quoted as saying. New Delhi needs to reject outrightly the demands as put forth by the KEA, as these demands, if accepted, would cause an irreparable damage to the national interest in the State, overturn the national policy concerning national power projects, demoralize the Armed forces and also help the terrorists to extend their tentacles to other parts of the State. |
