Anantnag, Mar16: In absence of a radiologist at Maternity and Child Care Hospital Anantnag- the only facility in south Kashmir for gynaecology and pediatric cases- authorities have brazenly put X-ray technicians on job.
Sources told Early Times that that on each day technicians have to see more than 200 USG requests which otherwise is a job of a radiologist.
They revealed that technicians are performing this job in the hospital from last many years.
"How can X-ray technician do USG tests when he is not competent? A doctor needs to undergo training for one year to perform this test," an insider said.
Sources said that most of the time these technicians have diagnosed wrongly due to which patients suffered.
They said that this unethical practice was brought into the notice of higher-ups of the health department many a times but nothing concrete happened on ground.
Reports said that 40-bed hospital that caters to entire south Kashmir as well as Chenab and Pir Panchal valleys is short of 60% staff and space shortage adds more sufferings to patients.
They said that hospital witnesses heavy rush of patients with more than 15,000 patients in the Out-patient department (OPD) and around 5000 indoor patients on a monthly basis.
Official sources said hospital is short of 5 gynaecologists as only nine gynecologists are available against the requirement for14 of them.
And 5 gynecologists, officials' claims seven have been posted at the hospital as 'attachment'.
The hospital, as per the records, has only 16 medical officers against the need for 25, while it has only four anaesthetists against the required number of eight.
As per the figures, the hospital has only 13 staff nurses and five FMPHWs against the requirement for 20 and 18 of them, respectively.
The hospital has four pharmacists, 10 nursing orderlies (NOs), and six laboratory technicians against the required numbers of 10, 15, and10, respectively.
