Govt mulls plan to explore feasibility of 'water channels' for inland transportation | SRTC to get fleet of 600 trucks, 150 busses: Govt | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Srinagar, June 9: During the debate on demands for grants of Rs. 9302.50 lakhs for transport department, when Legislators suggested various suggestions for streamlining the department to minimize the number of road accidents and to prevent pollution of an environment, the State government informed that a big fleet of approximately 750 vehicles comprising 600 Trucks and 150 busses will be incorporated with SRTC to generate employment and profit as well. During the proceedings, the government also apprised the members that state government is mulling the feasibility of the of water transportation where ever it is possible across the state including one on Baghliar Dam from Chanderkot to Pul Doda. Maintaining that Government is all set to revive the J&K SRTC, the concerned Minister said that JKSRTC will register zero losses in the year 2016-17. The minister asserted that no department in J&K was registering profit added that everybody blames SRTC for losses. Further referring to effort to streamline the department, minister said, "the department had inked a MoU with J&K Bank for procuring 750 vehicles which includes 600 Trucks and 150 busses with an aim to to further generate employment and profit as well. He also added that government will explore the option of water transportation including one along Baghliar Dam from Chanderkot to Pul Doda. Detailing the structure of Transport department, the minister said the department has 1370000 vehicles but only 236 employees which are managing 22 districts. He added that he had submitted a proposal to government for reorganization of the department. He said that no vehicle will be given mechanical test pass certificate without fulfilling the norms and added that system for issuing driving licenses will be strengthened Besides this he assured for establishment of ICC machine system at Jammu and Srinagar for physical checking of the conditions of the vehicles on different parameters. Further adding, Minister said that as a part of austerity measures, the department curtails the budget of Rs 3 Crore on various activities. |
