Reorganize JK to end uncertainty
3/21/2016 12:17:06 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 20: Jammu & Kashmir acceded to India on October 26, 1947. Since then, the State has been witnessing unrest. The Kashmiri Muslim leadership has been accusing New Delhi of diluting the valley's distinct identity, eroding the State's special status, and bringing the State under the ambit certain Articles of the Constitution of India. The Kashmiri leadership is divided into six groups variously demanding self-rule, greater autonomy, independence, merger with Pakistan, implementation of the 1975 Indira Gandhi-Sheikh Abdullah Accord and implementation of Pervez Musharraf's four-point formula as a first step. The Peoples Democratic Party vouches for self-rule. The National Conference has been demanding greater autonomy, bordering on virtual sovereignty. It wants restoration of the system as was in effect in the State under the Jammu & Kashmir Constitutional Act of 1939. Under this archaic Act, the ruling elite exercised unbridled and absolute judicial, legislative and executive powers, including the power to interpret the Constitution. The Congress has...

3/21/2016 12:16:21 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 20: Almost two and a half months have gone by since the imposition of Governor's Rule in Jammu and Kashmir following the death of Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed on January 7 at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and there appears nothing on the political horizon which could even remotely suggest that an elected government would be in place in J&K in the near future. In fact, there is the possibility of the State Governor, NN Vohra, dissolving the Assembly and ordering fresh elections. The fact of the matter is that the gulf between the coalition partners - the sub-regional Kashmiri party, the PDP, and the BJP - has instead of being bridged has ...
