Day of road mishaps: 25 killed, 120 hurt in Rajouri, Reasi | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 21: It turned out to be a day of road mishaps today. In the four incidents, which occured between 5.30 am to 7pm, 25 persons, including an army Major, a police Headconstable and over a dozen youth who were returning homes in Mahore villages after appearing in a police recruitment test, were killed and at least 120 others, including Vaishno Devi pilgrims and school children, wounded in the mountain-locked districts of Rajouri and Reasi.
Army authorities woke up to a tragedy when their Tata Sumo collided head-on with a tipper at Balshama near Dharamshal in Sunderbani area of Rajouri at about 5.30 am.
In the collision, Major Vasant Gourav of Maharashtra got killed and three others were wounded, police sources said.
The condition of two of the injured was stated to be critical. They were identified as Signalman VK Sharma of Corps of Signals and Sepoy Antony Swamy of 27 Madras.
The tipper driver was arrested and his vehicle seized, the sources added, saying a case had been registered against him.

Traffic police SI suspended | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 21: A traffic police Sub-Inspector (SI) was placed under suspension for failing to check overloading in the bus which today met with an accident at Bidda in Reasi, resulting in the death of 18 persons and injuries to 55 others.
The suspension order of SI Vinod Pandita was issued by SP, traffic, Alok Kumar.
Alok said a probe was also ordered into the incident.
He said the vehicle fell off the road when it gave way to the bus load and sank. The mishap occured when driver stopped the bus to give side to another vehicle, he added.

JAMMU, May 21: A day after a girl student committed suicide following failure in 12th class examination, another failed girl student today made an attempt on her life by shooting herself with a .12 bore gun at her residence near Kalakote in Rajouri.
Ranjana Kumari (18), daughter of Shiv Dev Singh of Sial Sui, Kalakote, failed in the 12th class examinations the results of which were declared Wednesday.
She was mentally depressed after her failure in exams. Today, she picked up her father's .12 bore gun and fired, pointing the gun muzzle at herself, police said.

JAMMU, May 21: Police today claimed that with the killing of two Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants at Gandoh Wednesday, the Doda district was made free of foreign ultras.
Now only two LeT militants were left in the district and operations were on to hunt them down too, police sources said.

| | IAF choppers evacuate Reasi bus accident victims | | | NEW DELHI: In the wake of today's bus accident off Reasi that killed at least 15 people and hurt quite a few others, helicopters of Indian Air Force took part in rescue operations.
