New Delhi, Mar 10: Shailender Singh from Jammu received the prestigious Sahiya Academy award at an impressive literary star-studed function held at Kamani auditorium, Copernicus Marg, New Delhi.
Shailender Singh received the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his Dogri novel 'Hashiye Par', the English version of which was published by the world renowned Oxford University Press across the globe last year.
Veteran literary personality Gurdial Singh, who was Chief Guest at the function, presented the award to Shailender Singh amidst thunderous applause for receiving this highest honour for his very first literary creation.
The novel Hashiye Par (literally translated as 'On the Margins') is located in Jammu near around Akhnoor where the River Chenab descends from the mountains. Hashiye Par describes the life and dynamics of struggle of Madan and his family.
Anju Bala, wife of Singh, who was also among those present at the award presentation ceremony, must have contributed meaningfully towards the success of her husband (man) and once again proved the famous saying that behind every successful man there is a woman. Volga and Sewadhani, the two young children of Mr. Singh, too seem to have also felt compensated by this award for the less attention they got from their beloved father when he remained busy till late in the night while writing the novel.
Speaking during the Awardee Writers' Meet organised by the Sahitya Akademi, Shailender Singh expressed his gratitude to the Sahitya Akademi for bestowing upon him this Award. He observed that the gratitude that he was conveying was not just on his own behalf but also on behalf of the millions who speak Dogri.
In his concluding remarks, Singh referred to his novel and observed that he is neither a writer nor wrote this book with the intention to be recognised as a writer. "I intended to project a social issue like an application written by a Petition Writer. Sewadhani, my second novel, too has been a projection of the issue of exploitation of children", he said.
