After nationwide outrage, PDP shelves Faktoo's release | Justifies Alam's release | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 10: After nationwide outrage over the release of hardline separatist leader Masarat Alam Bhat, the Peoples Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir has shelved the intended release of Dr Qasim Faktoo for the time being. Faktoo is presently serving life imprisonment in Srinagar central jail. However, PDP has justified Masarat's release saying it is within the ambit of law and as per the order passed by the apex court. Following yesterdays ruckus in theParliament over Masarat Alam's release, the Chief minister has conveyed to the Union government that no covict including Dr Faktoo will be released. Mufti, according to reports, has made it clear that he will review FIRs registered against the Youths of Kashmir for stone pelting. He also assured New Delhi that future decisions shall be taken for maintaining long lasting peace in the state. Meanwhile PDP Member Parliament in Rajya Sabha Fayaz Mir in his interview with various national news channels defended the release of Alam saying his release is purely based on legal grounds. He said Alam can be arrested if he poses threat to the security of state. Justifying Alam's release, PDP MLA Farooq Indrabi said that his party will move ahead as far as release of political prisoners who are languishing in jails for years together without any legal grounds. He said that thousands of youths were booked by the previous NC-Congress government in over 5000 FIRs registered in police stations of the state. He said that many innocent persons in his constituency were booked by police on the charge of stone pelting including those who were not even present anywhere in the state. He said that there is a need to review all such cases and time has come for release of such persons. "You can't put and confine the people behind the bars for years together---it can't be justified-either legally or on humanitarian grounds" said Indrabi. He said that at the time of Kandhar hijacking, BJP in return to safety of passengers release terrorist Masood Azhar who later shared the stage with Yaseen Malik in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, adding that Yaseen Malik still roams free and questioned the double yard sticks adopted by the previous government while putting Alam behind the bars despite apex court order his release. When contacted PDP Spokesperson Firdous Tak said that it is not possible to discuss each and every issue with the union government and said that Alam release from jail is well within the ambit of law. He said that under constitution, no one could be detained under PSA for more than 6 months and any extension if required permission from committee set up by the government to deal with such cases. He said that slapping of 7 PSA's on Alam is against the law and justified his release. However Tak did not answer the question whether the government has taken any surety bond from the Alam that he (Alam) will abide by the constitution of India and will not further involved in any anti India rhetoric after his release. While talking to "Early Times" BJP State Chief Spokesperson Sunil Sethi said that the party has taken serious view of the release of separatist Masarat Alam and has strongly opposed and rejected the decision of his release by the government. He said that the statement made by Alam after his release is sufficient for his fresh detention under PSA. He said that Alam's remaining at large anymore will be detrimental to the security of the state and worsen the security scenario in future. He said that BJP has demanded holding of "Steering Committee" meeting for discussing contentious issues. |
