Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 10: With a state like Jammu and Kashmir already facing dearth of doctors especially radiologists, for a Health Minister, priority should be on availing treatment facility to the needy patients twenty four hours a day rather than snubbing the doctors solely to garner public sympathy through cameras. These were the words of a doctor who wished not to be named.
The doctor told Early Times that Gandhi Nagar hospital has just one sanctioned post of radiologist who is catering more than hundred patients on routine owing to which the sufferings of the patients visiting the hospital for X-ray scans, ultrasound scans, CT scans have increased manifolds as it has become difficult for the radiologist to prepare reports of all the patients timely.
"Number of times, the issue of increasing the posts of radiologist in the Gandhi Nagar hospital to two from the sanctioned one post was taken up with the higher-ups in the department but on the pretext of one or other reason the proposal was sent to the cold storage. New pass outs of Radiology are not being absorbed in the state and finding no career option in the state, they are shifting to other states or private institutions within the state offering better packages and job opportunities", said the doctor.
To authenticate the fact, Early Times made a surprise visit of the Gandhi Nagar hospital today where a patient namely Fatoo Mohammad who had undergone an X-ray scan last month was not provided the report of X-ray till now.
Pertinent to mention here that as per a government reply tabled in the house of legislatures in December 2013, in reply to a question posed by then MLA Abdul Rehman Veeri, the shortage of staff including the paramedics and fourth class employees in the medical colleges and the associated hospitals of the state was 6000.
