Political instability in J&K | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 10: When on March 1 the PDP and the BJP formed coalition government in the state more than two months after the declaration of the assembly election results, it was hoped that the new dispensation would undo the past wrongs committed by the unpopular, corrupt and irresponsible NC-Congress coalition government and focus on developmental issues and address the more important issues facing the people. However, what happened during the last nine days has belied that hope and created an environment that has virtually made the people to believe that the present dispensation is unlikely to last long, as it is a dispensation of contradictions. Both the parties are pulling in different directions with the out-of-power NC and the Congress also fishing in troubled waters and adding more fuel to the fire to promote their own narrow political interests. The past nine days have not witnessed a single initiative taken by the ruling coalition aimed at mitigating the hardship of the people - a fact that has disappointed the general population. On the contrary, what the state has witnessed is the rise of a situation that has emboldened the separatists in Kashmir to step up their anti-India activities and organize pro-independence rallies in various parts of he Valley under the very nose of the law and order authorities, created an alarming situation in Jammu where people, including students, and non-PDP, non-BJP and non-NC political groups are holding protest demonstrations and burning effigies of the government and brought the state government and the Union Government face to face with each other. The unfortunate and dangerous development in the state rocked the Parliament not once but at least four times with the embarrassed Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister being forced to allay the fears of the opposition parties which used these developments to corner the Union Government and score political points. The entire print and electronic media has been focusing on the developments which have been unfolding in the state after the formation of the new government and the focus is not on issues of development and governance. The fact is that the media is taking on both the PDP and the BJP and accusing the former of playing with the national security and latter of not coming out of the government and charging the state government with creating the pre-1990 situation in the Valley which had led to the imposition of Governor/President Rule in the state. The media has taken the PDP's statements on Pakistan, Hurriyat, militants and Afzal Guru and release of such dreaded terrorists as Masrat Alam Bhat to mean a deliberate attempt to undo what the Indian state and Indian nation did after 1947 to integrate the state politically, constitutionally and economically with New Delhi. Indeed, the situation has climaxed to the point that both the PDP and the BJP are publicly contradicting each other. This is not good for the interest of the state, the country and the people of J&K. The top leadership of both the parties should sit up without losing a moment to sort out their differences and evolve a mechanism that helps them work in tandem for the welfare of the people of the state. This is a must to avert the possibility of the state coming under the Governor Rule. Those who are making policy pronouncements unilaterally must understand that the Indian nation will under no situation tolerate any move that is aimed at further widening the already rather wide gulf between Kashmir and the rest of the country. The best thing for both the parties to do is to constitute a coordination committee which should discuss and decide which issues are to be or not to be taken up.
