DB admits PIL and issues notice to CS & Law Secy | Appointment of Chairman SHRC | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 10: In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Voice for Rights seeking direction to State to appoint the Chairman and the Members of State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), Jammu which is headless since October 2011, a Division Bench (DB) of State High Court comprising Chief Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur admitted the PIL and issued notice to chief Secretary J&K and Commissioner Secretary Law to file response within two weeks. In the PIL petitioner submitted that State Human Rights Commission is headless as Justice Bashir-ud-Din was the last Chairman of the Commission and since October, 2011 Commission is headless. Despite the lapse of almost five years the respondents have not given heed to appoint chairman of one of the prestigious institutions of the state of Jammu and Kashmir i.e. Jammu and Kashmir state Human Rights Commission. Respondents have been unsuccessful in initiating the process of nominating its new head. "SHRC is not only lacking its Chairman but has also become defunct with all its members having retired from their services, it submitted. The absence of Chairperson and the Members of the Commission is creating hindrances in the normal functioning of the Commission. The staff of the Commission is not able to cop up with work in absence of the chairperson and members. (JNF) |
