Separate townships for KPs a myth; mixed townships to come up in Kashmir | 5,000 flats to be constructed in Central, South Kashmir | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 7: The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government at the centre seems to have taken Kashmiri Pandits for a ride with conflicting statements emanating from New Delhi with regard to their return to Kashmir valley from different parts of the country. The latest salvo fired by Minister of State for Home, Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary in the parliament that no separate zones would be set up for Kashmiri Pandits has virtually put the return of the community members to Kashmir in jeopardy. The statement is in contradiction to the rhetoric of BJP as the party has been maintaining that creation of separate zones is imperative for process of return of Kashmiri Pandits. Early Times has learnt that the blue print prepared by the Home Ministry with the consultation of Jammu & Kashmir government does not in any way suggest that separate townships would be set up for the Kashmiri Pandits in the valley. The plan of action implies that all the communities can live in the townships with these not being limited to Kashmiri Pandits alone. "It has been decided by the Home Ministry and state government that 5,000 flats would be constructed in these townships. While 50 percent of these flats would be given to the Kashmiri Pandits the remaining would be available to the people belonging to the different communities in the Kashmir valley," said sources. Sources said that 2,500 flats in these townships would be provided free of cost to the Kashmiri Pandits with the remaining 2,500 flats would be put on sale. Anybody can have ownership of these flats and the rate for them would be decided once the process is finalized, the sources said. "Out of the 5,000 flats 2,500 flats would be constructed in the Central Kashmir with the remaining 2,500 being constructed in the South Kashmir's Anantnag district. If the whole process goes on according to the plan then more flats would be constructed in the Central, South and North ranges of the Kashmir valley in the near future," said sources. Sources said that the plan was finalized between Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Home Minister, Rajnath Singh when the former called on the latter at New Delhi on April 7. It was after the finalization of this plan that Rajnath announced that Mufti has promised him that state government would provide land for the 'dedicated' zones for the Kashmiri Pandits. It would be in place to mention here that Home Minister's announcement had led to furore in the valley with leaders of both mainstream and separatist camps taking a dig at the central as well as state government. However, the latest statement from New Delhi that no separate zones for Kashmiri Pandits would be created has emboldened the separatist camp with hard-line Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani terming it as a victory of the 'resistance' camp. The stated position of BJP that a separate homeland should be created for Kashmiri Pandits has been diluted ever since it came to power at the centre last year following landslide victory in the general elections. There has been further softening of the stand ever since the party entered into a coalition with Peoples Democratic Party for government formation in the state. |
