Early Times Report

PAHALGAM, May 7: A day after Pahalgam Development Authority with the active support of Municipal Committee Pahalgam kick started a sanitation drive at this famous tourist destination, an influential hotelier chose Lidder- known for its crystal clear water, for emptying liquid waste of his hotel on Wednesday evening.
In a worst example of plunder of nature, the influential hotelier (Paradise Inn) dropped tones of solid and particularly liquid waste on Tulyan Nallah which finally joins Lidder river.
Locals told Early Times that they spotted succor machine of the Municipal Council dropping waste in river late in the evening and caught the driver who later fled from the spot along with the vehicle.
They said that the driver managed to drop the swage four times in the Lidder nallah till they noticed this anti-environment activity. "We tried our best to seize the vehicle but few employees who were accompanying the driver succeeded in freeing the driver along the vehicle," they said, adding Hotel Paradise Inn had hired the machine for emptying filled trenches.
Hotel employees acknowledge that they used the machine for emptying the trenches of their hotel but expressed ignorance about the duping of the same waste. "Yes we used machine but I don't know where he has emptying the machine," hotel employee told over phone. However, hotel owner Asif Iqbal wasn't available for a comment as he avoided repeated calls Admitting that the influential hotelier carried out the illegal and anti-environment activity with the help of Municipal Council Anantnag, Executive Officer of Municipal committee Pahalgam, Bashir Ahmad Dar assured stern action against the hotelier.
"Yes hotelier dropped liquid sewage in water body and without informing us he hired succor machine from Municipal Council Anantnag against the norms. Let me assure you that action will be taken against the hotelier who is at fault," Dar said.
Accusing authorities of Municipal Council Anantnag in facilitating the hotelier for carrying out anti-environment activity, Dar said, "I will bring this incident into the notice of Deputy Commissioner and will also take action against the hotelier," he said, adding he will not allow anyone to damage the environment and water bodies of Pahalgam.
Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Bashir Ahmad Khan too assured action, "Since you brought this incident into my notice.
I assure that I will take this issue seriously and seek explanation from both the committees and seek the details from MC Anantnag to know how they provided machine to the hotelier during night hours."
He also assured that stern action will be taken against the hotelier. Pertinently, Pahalgam Development Authority with the active support of Municipal committee for keeping this famous tourist destination 'neat and clean' started a sanitation drive, however the drive draw flaks from the environment activists because the sewage collected during drive was again dumped in the same Tulyan Nallah. CEO Pahalgam Development Authority, Reyaz Ahmad yesterday admitted that they are dumping the sewage into the Nallah, however claimed that they identified a site for sewage dumping.
"Yes it is fact that right now we dumping the sewage near to Nallah but we have identified a site and very soon sewage will be dumped there only," CEO said.
