Avinash Azad Early Times Report Jammu, May 7: Jammu, May 7: Disregarding the sentiments of Jammuites, who are fighting for establishment of AIIMS at Jammu, Health and Medical Education (HME) Minister shuts Gastroenterology department, leaving hundreds of patients in dilemma. Moreover, the minister also inaugurated over lived endoscopy machine to make headlines. Sources in HME department told Early Times that Minister for Health and Medical Education, Ch Lal Singh, closed Gastroenterology Department that was established by previous government on repeated requests made by principal GMCH Jammu, on April 23, 2015. "Cabinet in 2010 created Gastroenterology department along with other specialty departments for Jammu. The department started functioning with inauguration of Super Specialty Hospital, Jammu in 2014", sources said, adding that the move reflects concern of BJP for Jammuites. "The Gastroenterology department was made functional in last week of May 2014, in the period of six months around 1800 endoscopies were conducted by the department", sources said, adding that over 12000 people checked-up in OPD. They said that more than 500 patients' availed benefits Gastroenterology department, during a short span of 11 months. "The department carried out its work even with meager manpower and admitted and discharged over 500 patients", they added. Ridiculing, inauguration of Endoscopy machine in GMC, on April 26 (Sunday) 2015, the sources said that a defunct machine was inaugurated by the Minister get space in media. However, the copy of report related to condition of the machine submitted to Medical Superintendent GMCH, Jammu submitted by experts from NIEIT, reads that the machine was old one and has almost lived its life. "You had raised some queries regarding the Endosopic Machine. In this connection it is to mention that since the machine is old and has almost lived its life. Even though the machine is currently in working mode, unpredictable, can't be trusted fully keeping in view the patients in single unit and the nature of life saving procedure doen, the volume of endoscopic in the hospital. It is therefore requested that a new machine be purchased", the letter wrote by NIEIT to Medical Superintendent GMCH, under reference number 18(12.17)-15, dated 10/03/ 2015 reads.
