SRINAGAR, May 7: Panic gripped Kargil District of Ladakh this morning after one artificial lake breached its banks washing away schools, government structures and bridges in different villages. According to reports, at around 8 a.m this morning an artificial lake,Phutkal breached its banks in Zanskar village of Kargil district of Ladakh division which washed away schools, farm fields and guest Houses in villages namely Yugar, Cha, Raru, Pipcha and Padum. However no loss of life has been reported so far. Police station Kargil said that no casualty was reported from the area till late evening today. However, field reports received from rescue teams from operation site suggest that floods caused damage to public and private property worth lakhs of rupees in many villages. Details reveal that in nearby Yugar and Cha villages, many fields and launching bridges were washed away including two launching bridges in Ichar village and hundreds of acres of irrigation land at different places in yugar and Cha villages. In Raru Village a launching bridge was washed away by floods and In Pipcha village one bridge succumbed to the floods. Besides two schools and guest houses were also damaged by floods in the area. "We had just woken up when this news reached to us and it was said that floods are likely to reach the village within 10-15 minutes, it was said that waters are about to cross Padum village. We left our home and whole of river side population around Padum has already been evacuated along with the people of Chilling," said a sarpanch. Locals said that sudden release of water from Phutkal Lake has affected around 40 villages in Zanskar sub-division of Kargil district. However while appreciating the rescue efforts of District Administration, locals said that authorities were on toes since early morning for rescue and relief operations and were also monitoring the situation closely by conducting regular aerial surveys of the area. Locals demand that Central government must intervene to develop the Phutkal river as safe tourist destination without causing damage topublic and Private Property every year and force locals of the area to move towards safer places in this season. Pertinently on December 31 last year, a massive landslide had blocked the Phuktal river which created the artificial lake and caused damageto the area. After four months, authorities seeing seriousness of the matter created a 75-meter-long channel to drain out water from the artificial lake in a controlled manner to provide relief to locals living in the area. |
