Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 7 : Security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge near here to disperse thousands of daily wagers and contractuals who were demanding regularisation of their services. Daily wagers and contratuals, working in different state government departments, including Public Health Engineering (PHE), Power Development Department (PDDP) and Horticulture departments from different parts of the valley assembled at Mushtaq Press Enclave near here today. Raising slogans in favour of their demands, the demonstrators alleged that despite completing more than 10 years their services were not being regularised by the government. However, when the employees tried to hit the main road and move towards civil secretariat, seat of the government, including office of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, security forces and state police swung into action. Security forces later resorted to lathicharge after the demonstrators refused to disperse and continued their march. Several teargas shells were burst to disperse the demonstrators, leading to massive traffic jam on the Residency road and Moulana Azad road. There are more than 50,000 daily wagers and contractual working in different departments in the Kashmir valley. However, the previous National Conference (NC) and Congress alliance government put hold the regularisation of daily wagers and contractual after sharp differences over their number between then Finance minister Abdul Rahim Rather and PHE minister Shyam Lal Sharma. The present People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to constitute a committee to look into these appointments and their actual number. |
