Lathi-Khawas locals allege govt failed to provide water supply since 'six decades' | | | Early Times Report Rajouri, Feb 15: Alleged the government as well as PHE department's failure to provide any water supply scheme for the inhabitants of village Lathi in Khawas tehsil in Rajouri district since independence, the residents held a strong protest on Sunday evening demanding from authorities to provide safe drinking water to the village. "We are dependent on natural resources of water since independence. Recently PWD(R&B) department while construction road in the area have destroyed these natural resources" said Jangwas, Mohd Shakeel and others. Protestors added that more than 200 inhabitants of the area are now facing acute shortage of drinking water and despite several representations to concerned PHE officials no action yet has been taken to resolve their problem. The protestors further warned to intensify protest if the PHE department fails to provide them safe drinking water. Meanwhile, after getting no response from concerned Public Health Engineering (PHE) department officials, inhabitants of lower Jawahar Nagar,Thudi and adjoining areas also had held protest demonstration following no water was supplied to their areas for the last more than ten days. In a unique protest number of women, children and men carrying empty vessels and raising slogans against the district administration and PHE officials they blocked the road to register their protest. "Even the hand pump installed in the area was out of order for the last few days adding more problems especially for the women to bring water from natural resources after covering distance between 2-4 kilometers" said Mohd sadiq. Haji Rafiq Lone and other also spoke on the occasion and warned the PHE authorities to restore water supply at earliest otherwise they will organize large scale protest demonstration On getting information of protest demonstration a police party headed by senior police officer rushed to spot and pacified the people assuring them to take up the matter with senior PHE officials. A senior PHE official said that the water supply was snapped to the area due to damage to the water pipes. |
