CAPD rules out modification in ration allocation | | | Majid Nabi
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb15: The Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department (CA&PD) Monday, categorically rejected any modifications with regards to ration allocation as per National Food Security (NFSA) Act in the state. Special Secretary (CA&PD), Mohammad Akbar Ganai said that there is no criterion set for any category and people as per preceding rules of the act will get ration @ five kilograms per person per month. On being asked as to how the families having two or three members sustain on five kilograms ration monthly he said "why not, if we see tons of rice is being wasted during marriage season in Kashmir, one person approximately is consuming 120 grams of rice at a time" He said that people could better sustain on five kilograms rice and if the need arises they could get extra ration from the market. "What will happen if people spend few rupees on extra kilos, there is no modification in ration allocation and the act which has been implemented in the state today is meant for seventy four lakh people who will get ration @ five kilograms without any filtration," Ganai told 'Early Times'. He said there is no criteria set for Above Poverty Line (APL) or Below Poverty Line (BPL) categories as far as the implementation of new act is concerned. "This act is aimed to provide benefits to poor who could not get ration from the market, my point is as to why the people who do charity needs subsidy on food grains. They could easily get ration from the market," he said. Pertinently, the previous Mufti Mohammad Sayeed led PDP and BJP led government had agreed for amendments in ration distribution on government level after the hue and cry was raised from everywhere over the implementation of controversial act. Valley witnessed widespread protests in view of the implementation of NFSA in the state with people demanding immediate role back of the decision. PDP President and Parliamentarian Mehbooba Mufti had claimed that the government will surely make amendments in ration allocation "areas where people need extra ration government will surely look into it" she had claimed. Pertinent to mention here the National Food Security Act has been implemented in the state which is under Governors rule after the demise of former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on January 7 last month. |
