Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 15: Adding another feather to his cap, the son of the soil and promising rifle shooter Chain Singh with his sterling performance has won as many as six gold medals in the ongoing 12th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games being held at Guwahati, Assam. The ace shooter Chain Singh, who hails from a remote village Chainser in Gandoh area of mountainous Doda District, has once again made his home state proud with his superlative performances in individual as well as team events. Singh has a humble background as he belongs to an economically backward family residing in village Chainser in Doda district. Singh's father is a farmer while his mother is a housewife. He has one younger brother and a sister. Singh completed his schooling from village schools. After completing his higher secondary education from Higher Secondary School, Kalhotran in Gandoh he joined Indian army. Chain Singh's feat in individual events was more outstanding as he even stole the thunder from the Olympic bronze-medalist Gagan Narang since Singh won all the three gold medals in individual events of 50m Rifle Prone, 10m Air Rifle and 50m Rifle 3 positions. Narang, who won a bronze in the London Olympics in 10m air rifle, took part in all the three rifle events but failed to pick up a single gold medal for himself and was able to bag only a silver in 50m Rifle Prone, bronze in 10m Air Rifle and again settling for a silver in 50m Rifle 3 positions. The 26-year-old Chain Singh completed a remarkable sweep of six gold medals there by helping India win all the three team events he took part in. It is pertinent to mention here that Chain Singh had already brought laurels to the state by winning a bronze medal in 50m rifle three position in the 17th Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea in September, 2014. Singh, an Army marksman, also holds the distinction of holding two national records in 50m Rifle 3 Positions event along with the 50m Rifle Prone discipline. Chain Singh has also secured Rio 2016 Olympics quota place, when he reached the finals of the Men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions event at the ISSF World Cup (Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun) held in Gabala, Azerbaijan in August 2015. Chain Singh made it possible through his hard work, selfless dedication and mentorship of Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU), an elite sports unit and the shooting node of the Indian Army. |
