'We are here to serve not to harass people: Sangeeta Gupta | 'Lack of awareness prove counterproductive for IT Department' | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 15, : Admitting the department has miserably failed to do away with the apprehensions of affluent class in Kashmir vis-à-vis filing of returns and other income tax issues, Principal Commissioner Income Tax Department J&K Sangeeta Gupta Monday said that there is a dire need to make the tax system transparent in Valley. Addressing a news conference at Rajbagh based office, Sangeeta Gupta said that lack of awareness among traders and other people who fall in taxable category has been proving counterproductive for the Department. "Business community feel sacred when the Department ask them to file their Returns. Filing of Returns doesn't mean filing of profit. They can show losses as well and the department will give them exemptions and deductions. It is a misconception among people here that filing of Returns means filing of profit only," she said. "There is a wide scope of improvement in our department in Kashmir Valley. I have realized that people are not happy with Central Government and they abhor to pay their taxes. They should understand besides some states in North East Kashmir is the state where Central Government spends more than what revenue they collect in the form of taxes. People have grievances and I want to redress them. I admit that department here has failed to take traders on board on different issues and that is why tax payers are reluctant to pay their taxes," she said. Principal Commissioner Income Tax Department J&K said that she has directed her subordinates to be sensitive towards the grievances and apprehensions of the tax payers. "After visiting Kashmir I realized here that business community has been suffering tremendous losses due to frequent strikes. Besides floods have ravaged the economy. We didn't collect taxes from flood affected traders. We are not here to harass anyone but to serve them," she said. Responding to a question, Gupta said out of total 13.5 lakh PAN card holders only 84,000 people had filed their returns by June last year. There were only 69,000 effective assesses but after proper verification we added 90,000 more assesses out of which 23000 are from Kashmir Valley. |
