Free BMD check-up camp held at SSH Jammu | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 15: A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) check-up camp was held at Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) in the department of Nephrology Jammu today. The camp was held under the supervision of Dr SK Bali Head Nephrology Department (SSH) The tests were conducted by the team and during the day-long camp renowned doctors examined over 150 patients and subsequently advised them to what to eat and which medicine to take. Speaking on the occasion, Dr SK Bali said that bone mineral density test uses X-rays to measure the amount of minerals namely calcium in the bones. This test is important for people who are at risk for osteoporosis, especially women and older adults. "We all lose some bone mass as we age. Bones naturally become thinner (called osteopenia) as we grow older, because existing bone is broken down faster than new bone is made. As this occurs, our bones lose calcium and other minerals and become lighter, less dense, and more porous. This makes the bones weaker and increases the chance that they might break (fracture). With further bone loss, osteopenia leads to osteoporosis. So the thicker your bones are, the longer it takes to get osteoporosis. Although osteoporosis can occur in men, it is most common in women older than age 65. Dr Surinder Singh Sodhi of Nephrology Department also assisted the Dr Bali in the camp and advised patients that changing life style is also led symptoms of low BMD. |
