APSCC leaders call on CM, discuss community issues with Mehbooba | | | SRINAGAR, June 5: All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) today called on chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and demanded minority status for the socio-economic upliftment of the Sikh community in the state. In a statement, a spokesman of APSCC said that a delegation of Sikh leaders led by APSCC Chairman, Jagmohan Singh Raina met Mehbooba and expressed concern over the alleged discrimination and negligence of government in resolving the issues faced by Sikhs ever since eruption of turmoil in the state. "Sikhs being a microscopic community in Jammu & Kashmir have to fight for their minority status, despite the fact that they are considered as a minority in India under the Minority Act of National Minority Commission of India 2C of 1992 along with other communities, including Muslims, Buddhists and Christians," said Raina. The APSCC Chairman said that in the past few decades governments have used 'Divide and rule' policy against the Sikhs. He said the performance of the present government is the key to its success in the coming times. He said to the utter disappointment of community members, provisions of National Commission of Minority Act are yet to be implemented in the state. "During the campaign for 2014 elections PDP promised to grant the minority status to Sikhs of Jammu & Kashmir. The same was also incorporated in the election manifesto of PDP for state elections in 2014," said Raina during her meeting with the chief minister. The delegation also raised other pending demands such as restoring of teaching staff for Punjabi language in colleges and schools; issuance of state subject certificate and other certificates through central authority or Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Office on the pattern of issuing of state subject certificates by Migrant Commissioner. |
