Mathura has umpteen lessons for Jammu, but are there any takers? | | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 5: The gory incident at Mathura that left 28 killed, scores injured, an SHO shot dead from point blank range, a SP lynched to death and the conscience of entire country wounded has many lessons for the political class of Jammu and Kashmir also, but only if they could see beyond their vested interests. The old plot used by the politicians to create dedicated vote banks within their constituencies by encouraging their supporters to encroach large chunks of state land using their political influence not only to provide them immunity from the system, but also misuse the system to avail all facilities and amenities to them in their illegally occupied asylums has been woefully exposed time and again, but it has failed to deter the politicians from playing dangerous games to satiate their gluttony for power. The scale of the incident of Jawahar bagh in Mathura might have been different, but one needs not scratch one's memory to recall incidents at Sidhra, Gole Gujral, Nikki Tawi and more recently Sarore Bari Brahmana, where encroachers launched armed attacks on the teams of police and other enforcement agencies who dared to get the illegally land vacated from the encroachers, patronized by politicians of Kashmir based parties. In each of these incidents, policemen and officials received grievous injuries, but every time, the attackers hoodwinked the system with the support of their political masters and escaped unharmed. The recent incident at Sarore, where policemen were held hostage, beaten blue and black and their weapons snatched by the violent mob of encroachers would have resulted in several casualties, had the officers on the spot not taken timely decision. The officers who saved lives of their men and fellow officers are now being victimized on the behest of same politicians and their agents in the administration is another part of the story. While first political family of Uttar Pradesh, is being accused of sheltering and patronizing the encroachers in Mathura, it is an open secret that many politicians including sitting and former Ministers have openly visited the violent encroachers and even assured action against 'erring' officers. It is a matter of concern that many an officers in the police and civil administration are eager to serve the vested interests of these politicians, who then victimize the upright officers for not falling in line. Since in Jammu and Kashmir, the systematic encroachments on the behest of the politicians are also assigned communal colour, the gamut is gaining dangerous dimensions and may soon manifest into an incident as seen in Jwahar Bagh Mathura. But would it curb the greedy politicians from playing dangerous games for vote bank politics is a million dollar question. |
