Cops pick up brooms | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 5: Even as there has been a sudden rise in deadly militant strikes in south Kashmir, which is the strategic route for upcoming Amarnath Yatra, the police are concentrating more on sanitation-cum-cleanliness drives in the region. Just a day after two personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Police were shot dead by militants in Anantnag, the adjacent Awantipora police spend Sunday holding cleanliness drive in the area. This is not any hearsay, but officially confirmed by the police. "To supplement the efforts of civil administration in cleanliness and sanitation, a "Sanitation-cum-Cleanliness Drive" was launched by Police in Awantipora," an official handout from the Police Control Room Srinagar said. "Awantipora police headed by the SP Awantipora, Shridhar Patil in association with Municipal authorities, in its efforts to make the area clean, cleared the garbage on both sides of National Highway from Chandhara crossing to Galender, Pampore," the handout added. "The area is important for tourists as the world famous saffron grows here and is emerging as a good tourist (spot)of the area. This endeavor of Awantipora police will continue and support of general public of Awantipora is sought to join in the efforts in keeping the area clean," the handout added. The police is busy with the "odd jobs" at a time when there have been two deadly back-to-back militant attacks in south Kashmir. While on June 4, two cops were killed near the General Bus Stand Anantnag, on June 3, three Border Security Force personnel were killed and seven others wounded when the Hizb militants ambushed a BSF convoy on the highway in this south Kashmir district. The Home Minister Rajnath Singh has already sent a high level team to Kashmir to review the security arrangements when the strategic highway, the main road link to Amarnath cave shrine, is under attacks. Apart from the security analysts even the opposition has sought alert on the highway and improvement in the security grid to thwart any militant activity. "This time, the sole motive of police and other security forces needs to be improvement of the security grid as otherwise militants have been gaining grounds in south Kashmir, the gateway to Amarnath Shrine… Such odd time activities of picking up brooms when guns should be the priority will only worsen the situation," ridiculed a retired police official. Security analysts opine that police is confused on how to tackle the ground situation while the state government seems to have taken things lightly. "In this part of the year, security traditionally needs to be on alert for the smooth conduct of Yatra. And if roads are not clean it's the duty of the concerned civil administration to improve it. Police is answerable for militant attacks, not rise in garbage," said a senior official. |
