SSC, JKOA at loggerheads | We're above State Sports Council: Sharma | | Kunal Shrivatsa
Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 5: The confrontation between the sports bodies come to fore yet again today at a function organized by JKOA to honour medal winning players of 2015 National Games from the state as the Association asserted that they are the superior body in the field of sports in state and do not require any support from the State Sports Council. Lambasting State Sports Council for its alleged ''dictatorial attitude'', Secretary General, JKOA Prof Ashutosh Sharma while addressing the gathering during the function said, "We are a superior body and above State Sports Council. We do not need them in the field of sports, we will do it on our own.'' He also rebuked the State Sports Council for de-recognizing the Association. "We do not want funds from them. We are capable of running the sports affairs,'' said Prof Sharma. Earlier, the JKOA state president Rangeel Singh also criticized the State Sports Council for not giving consideration to sportspersons and people having vast knowledge in the field of sports. "It is unfortunate that only blue-eyed were taken as members of sports council and in such circumstances, sports cannot be flourished in the state,''Singh said. He appealed to the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who is also the president State Sports Council to dissolve the Council and appoint new members. Meanwhile, Secretary General, Indian Olympic Association, Rajiv Mehta, in his address had little variation in his comments from his colleagues. "J&K has no dearth of talent but the players are required to be groomed,'' said Mehta, asking the JKOA members to have cordial relations with the State Sports Council since efforts by both the organizations will raise the standard of sports and yield positive results. It is worthwhile to mention here that the Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council had withdrawn the recognition of JKOA through an order issued on March 15 last. The order issued by the Council stated that the Association shall not be eligible for grant-in-aid- as well as other forms of assistance from the State Government and J&K State Sports Council and not to derive the authority to perform the public functions of organizing state games or selecting and deputing the State teams/contingent for participation in Zonal/National level competitions/games and also not to represent the state in national sports federations/Indian Olympic Association events, meets, conferences on behalf of J&K Sports Council. |
