Militants out to disrupt Anantnag by-polls, Amarnath Yatra | Separatists instigating youth to join guerilla ranks | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 5: Militants carrying out two major strikes in south Kashmir's Bijbehara and Anantnag area has put the security agencies on high alert as the by-polls in the area for the Anantnag assembly constituency are scheduled to be held on June 22 and Amarnath Yatra would commence from July 2. Two policemen, including an officer, were killed when militants fired upon a Police party in Anantnag town on Saturday. Earlier, on Friday three soldiers of Border Security Force were killed and nine others injured as militants ambushed their convoy at Goriwan area of Bijbehara town on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. The by-polls for the Anantnag seat were necessitated due to the demise of then chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on January 7 this year who was the MLA Anantnag. Eight candidates, including the incumbent Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, are in fray in the Anantnag assembly constituency. Sources said that security agencies have taken a serious note of the attacks, and have activated their network to track the militants who have suddenly appeared in the area. "Militants are under pressure as their handlers sitting across the Line of Control want them to terrify the people ahead of the by-polls," said a source. " They (militants) are choosing crowded place to provoke the forces. Exercise restrained by the BSF and policemen have prevented the situation from taking an ugly turn. Militants and separatists are searching for dead bodies of the civilians to trigger unrest ahead of by-polls." It's in place to mention here that separatists have already called upon the people to stay away from polls. "Militants attacking the security force personnel is a part of the ploy to unleash terror to back the poll boycott call given by the separatists. The militancy related incidents in Anantnag town were at their lowest ebb during the past decade. The spurt in militancy related incidents in south Kashmir is a cause of concern and it has to be addressed without wasting anytime as only 15-days are left for by-polls to be held," the source added. He said, "Preliminary investigations have revealed that militants who carried out attacks on paramilitary BSF men and policemen had come from outside the district. There are possibilities about a few more local militants having entered Anantnag town." Sources said, "Both the attacks were carried out by the local militants, who have been indoctrinated by radical organizations during the past few years. We have got inputs that a few youth who were involved in stone pelting in 2010 have joined the militant ranks at the behest of separatists and their henchmen." A police official while talking to Early Times said, "The history sheeters in the area are being watched and a few of them have been rounded up. The security in Anantnag town and other adjoining areas has been beefed up. Besides by-polls we have to ensure that Amarnath Yatra which is scheduled to commence on July 2 should go on without any disruption." |
