HC notice to Govt over earthquake preparedness, response | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 7: In a PIL, seeking a direction to state to constitute a committee under the chairmanship of chief secretary with members of concerned field to review the preparedness of state government with regard to earthquakes, a high court division bench of first puisne judge, Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar and Justice B S Walia today issued notice to union home secretary, vice-chairman of national disaster management committee, J&K CS and financial commissioner (revenue) to file response. The bench also directed registry to list this PIL in the week commencing from June 27 next. The petitioner's counsel submitted that keeping in view the vulnerability to earthquakes, the country was divided into four zones. And, according to the disaster and hazard profile of J&K drawn by the state department of ecology environment and remote sensing, J&K falls in the most vulnerable zones, ie Zone-IV and Zone-V. Kashmir falls more or less in Zone-V and Ladakh region and Jammu region fall in zone-IV. |
