Substandard rice: FIR to be registered after analysis report | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report Srinagar, June 7: Crime Branch after having initiated preliminary investigation and conducted raids on Food Corporation of India stores for alleged supply of substandard rice to consumers, Tuesday said that it has forwarded three samples of rice for analysis and incase of substandard quality, FIR will be registered. "We have collected three samples of the rice from the FCI stores and have forwarded the same for the analysis," one of the senior officials of Crime Branch Srinagar informed Early Times. He said that they are hopeful that Crime will receive report in next couple of days. "We hope that we will receive the report in next few days. If any of the samples found substandard we will register the case". Meanwhile the Inspector General of police Crime Branch Muneer Ahmad Khan also said that the crime branch has carried out detailed enquiry in this regard. "After receiving inputs that the substandard rice is being sold to consumers, we conducted raids, collected samples and seized records," Khan said. He said that there are reports of adulterated rice being supplied to consumers at government outlets. "We have also questioned the officials in this regard and I can assure you that once we get analysis reports, FIR will be registered." It is pertinent to mention here that minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (C&PD), Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali had admitted that the substandard supply of rice is being received by the department. "Yes it is true that our one of the depot in North Kashmir has received two trucks of substandard rice. We have communicated to authorities of FCI in this regard and both the trucks were sent back to the FCI," Zulfkar Ali had told Early Times. The minister had also stated that the government will fully cooperate with the crime branch during the investigation. The sources in the crime said that they have reports that high quality FCI rice is being sold in open market while the same is replaced in the godowns by substandard ration. "High quality rice gets replaced and consumers are being provided with substandard rice," sources said adding that the rice gets replaced on way to Kashmir from Punjab. Sources said that there are reports that once multiple truckloads of rice leave FCI depots for J&K, many of them are unloaded at several rice shelters on the way in Punjab and tones of high-standard rice are then replaced with the substandard one. "Then that substandard rice gets supplied to consumers," sources said. |
