Militants strikes have become a routine affair for people in Kashmir | Common masses used to such eventualities | |
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jun 7: As militant strikes and attacks have become a regular feature in Kashmir Valley and people have become used to the same for last 27 years. The routine strikes by terrorists and killings of members of security forces, police or innocent people has become a routine affair in Kashmir and people have become used to it as there is no regret or condemnation of such incidents anywhere in Valley now. Unlike past when shops and business establishments in entire town were closed down during such attacks and people rush to their homes for safety as they do not want to take any risk in such eventualities. However situation is totally changed now as the common masses are not interested in all such affairs and killings by terrorists or encounters have become a routine feature for the people who pay no attention to the same. The people dont bother who was killed and by whom as they prefer to remain busy in their routine and daily work. This was witnessed during the recent attack on BSF in Bijebehara and police personnel in Anantnag township of South Kashmir where there was no disturbance in normal life and routine business continued. Neither shopkeepers downed the shutters of their business establishments nor the transport service was disturbed and every thing functioned normally as if nothing had happened. When a local trader in Lazbal area of Anantnag was asked the cause of such a sudden change among the people by this reporter he said ``Sir we are used to this situation for last 27 years now and how far we will close down our business establishments as killings have become a routine affair now. ``This is an unending process so we are trying to adopt the situation and leave every thing to our fate, said another trader running a Kiryana shop in the same locality. ``Nothing has changed for us since 1989-90., We have been misled by every one since 1947 whether the mainstream politicians or separatists every one exploited us for their vested interests and no one showed any sincerity in settling the issue permanently, he added. During the June 4 attack on police personnel at KP road in Anantnag every thing seemed normal half an hour after the incident and no one could guess that two cops were killed at this place by terrorists during broad day light and later they managed to escape. However every thing remained normal in the area as traffic plied as a routine affair on the KP road while some shops in 300 meter vicinity were closed and rest in entire township of Anantnag business establishments were open. The passers by in the area even after one hour could not ascertain that militants have struck in the area as every thing seemed normal there. Same was case in Bijebehara where one day earlier the BSF jawans were killed by terrorists who after the incident managed to flee. The over two decade long turmoil and terrorist violence has now left Kashmiris with no alternative but to compromise with the situation as closing the routine business has affected their livelihood to a great extent over the years. ``The common man in Kashmir has no sympathy with the terrorist or the separatists but we have been trapped in such a way that we are unable to come out of the situation said another trader in Mattan Chowk Antnag. Not only the separatists but the mainstream politicians are also responsible for this mess. They misled the people for their vote politics and never showed any sincerity in addressing the real issues faced by the masses. ``It was NC which gave the slogan of plebiscite in 1953 when Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah was dethroned. Despite being the architect of instrument of Accession Sheikh showed teeth to India and tried to liberate Kashmir by misleading innocent Kashmiris. Even Congress was never sincere to us which dethroned Sheikh in 1953 later compromised with him in 1975 and supported him in formation of Government. This love hate policy of NC-Congress towards each other continued as in 1977 Congress withdrew support to Sheikh. After the death of Sheikh again Congress dethroned duly elected Government of Dr Farooq Abdullah and installed Gulam Mohammed Shah as CM through defection in NC to force Dr Abdullah to toe Congress line, he added. He said in 1986 communal riots were masterminded by the vested interests to dethrone G M Shah and impose Governor rule and later Dr Abdullah was forced to join hands with Congress for the coalition in the State. This uncertainty was the main cause of the present turmoil in Valley and now the separatists and terrorists are also playing the same politics and they too exploit the people by raising emotive issues so that the disturbance and tirade against India continues.
