Yasin Malik beats Police officer, mainstream parties seek his release | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 7: The legislators have been unanimous in demanding the release of the separatist and JKLF chairman Yasin Malik, despite the fact that his pictures of slapping a senior cop in Srinagar have become public. Malik on June 5 was arrested by the Srinagar police for slapping and attacking their officers during a protest rally carried out in valley. The entire incident was caught on camera, in which the JKL chief can be seen slapping and attacking policemen, while his supporters continue to hurl abuses at them. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon when Malik and his supporters were protesting against BJP-PDP's decision of building separate colonies for Kashmiri Pandits. A few minutes after the protest the cops detained Malik for almost 24 hours and later took him to custody for spreading unrest in the state. However, in a bid to score the political points, the legislators in open were seen on the floor of the house, demanding Malik's release from the jail. CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam Muhammad Yusuf Tarigami slammed the Government for arresting Malik, saying "they (separatists) should be dealt politically." "The Government is responding to them through administrative actions but they should be approached politically," the lawmaker said. "These actions can disturb peace in the State," he said. Day after the arrest, despite everything caught on camera, the JKLF spokesman claimed Malik has been arrested in connection with a 29-old case pertaining to rally of the then Muslim United Front held in 1987. Tarigami wasn't alone in demanding Malik's release. There were even the Congress legislators who wanted government to release Malik and condemned his arrest. The senior Congress leader and the former minister G.M Soroori questioned government's decision to arrest Malik. He was seconded by MLA Khansahib and PDF chief Hakeem Mohammad Yasin. Furthermore, the former Agriculture minister, Ghulam Hassan Mir on Monday said that the government should deal with Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik politically. Mir in a statement said the PDP was earlier claiming that the 'opposition will not be suppressed' but after assuming the charge, it launched crackdown against separatists, which is not a proper way to deal with the situation. "I appeal the government to release Malik at earliest," he said. However, there was a little mention of the cop who was beaten up by Malik in broad day light. Not only has such a situation exposed the true colours of the political parties but has also revealed how law and order could become a least concern for those who want to attain fame no matter how. |
