Netas, workers summon Govt officials to PDP hqrs for meetings | NC-SMC lock horns, BJP silent | | ET Report SRINAGAR, June 7: In brazen violation of norms, the leaders and even workers from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party are "summoning" the government officials to the PDP head office only to "interfere" on issues pertaining to governance in the summer capital. In the recent past, the PDP leaders formally "summoned" the government officials to their headquarters at least twice, while similar meetings are being held at personal offices of the party leaders. On May 31, the top brass of Srinagar Municipal Corporation was "summoned for a crucial meeting" at the PDP head office near SK Park here. Officials confirmed that apart from the SMC Commissioner, Bashir Ahmed Khan and the Joint Commissioners, even Ward Officers ensured their presence at the meeting, which was chaired by PDP leaders. Sources said the official machinery was asked to "religiously meet the demands of the PDP workers, without any delay." "We were told not to disrupt any constructions being undertaken by the party people and to install streetlights in areas where the people had voted for the party during the Assembly elections," said an SMC official, asking not to be named. He said it was for the first that government officials were being summoned by party workers. But the biggest discussion at the meeting remained the ongoingland-filling of the Doodh Ganga canal by SMC in Batamaloo locality of south Srinagar. As already reported by Early Times, the canal is being filled for rehabilitation of the "workers of a political party", though the development is feared to make Srinagar more flood-prone. Sources said the PDP workers pulled up the SMC Commissioner, Bashir Ahmed Khan for "sluggish land filling of the canal." Finally the SMC officials are understood to have assured the PDP workers that the "land for their rehabilitation" would be ready soon. While the ongoing land-filling of Doodh Ganga canal has drawn severe criticism from public circles with experts saying that the City would turn more vulnerable to floods, the SMC is unmoved by the public outcry. The concerned Executive Engineer, Shafaat Khan, who was among the officials, who attended the meeting at the PDP head office said the land-filling of this canal was among the priorities of the ruling government. The PDP confirmed that the meeting was chaired MLC KhurshidAalam, while party leader and hotelier from Srinagar, Abdul HameedKoshin was also present. Talking to Early Times Koshin said there was no wrong in holding official meetings at the PDP office. He said not workers alone but MLAs and MLC Khurshid Alam from the party attended such meetings aimed at "development of Srinagar." He said next meeting would be held with LAWDA officials. The SMC Commissioner Bashir Ahmed Khan on the other hand said there was no wrong in attending meeting at the PDP office. He alleged that SMC recently even held meeting at the Nawa-e-Subh office of the National Conference. But the NC refuted the SMC Commissioner's claims adding that the party never held meeting of any official machinery at their office. The furious NC spokesman JunaidAzimMattu took to social media to take a dig at the SMC Commissioner and termed him "Halqa president of PDP." "If the SMC Commissioner has to behave like a PDP Halqa President - least he can do is not lie. No such meeting was ever convened by NC," JunaidAzimMattu tweeted. Pertinently, the PDP workers are calling meetings of departments, which lie with BharatiyaJanta Party ministers, particularly Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh, who also happens to head the Housing ministry. Dr Singh declined to comment on the issue. His "PA" who picked up the phone said: "Sahib is busy, he will get back to you later." |
