Early Times Report
Poonch, June 7: At a time when the state government claims to streamline public transport facilities in state, passengers in Poonch district particularly in Mendhar continue to bear the brunt in overloaded minibuses as the Traffic Police and the concerned transport authorities are accused of being hand-in-glove with the transporters.
Traffic department utterly has failed to check the overloading in buses and other vehicles which often leads to fatal accidents in the district. The lackadaisical approach of concerned department apparently has allowed transporters to put lives of hundreds of passengers at risk.
Some locals of Mendhar while talking to Early Times said that overloading of mini buses plying on routes to Surankote Mendhar Poonch Mandi Balakote Harni and other adjoining areas has become a point of concern for commuters and daily passengers.
Nisha of Mendhar lamented the non serious approach of monitoring agencies is resulting into major problem of overloading which puts passengers prone to risk.
"The indifferent attitude of Traffic Police towards keeping a check on traffic defaulters has not only encouraged the transport operators but also made general public prone top greater risks," Nisha said.
Another local Er Mustaq Jatt said that we have repeatedly urged transport authorities to put a curb upon overloading and overcharging by the bus operators but no action has been taken till date.
"The continuous overloading indicates that there is unholy nexus between traffic police personnel and Transporters that is why the concerned department has failed controlling the menace of overloading, said a group of students.
They alleged that apart from overloading the overcharging is also becoming a routine affair as they (mini bus operators) don't charge students fare after late afternoon and on Sundays as if the students status got changed from students to an 'earner'.
The locals accused the traffic department of adopting non serious approach giving space to mini bus operators to indulge in mal-practice.
