| Ill equipped JK police suffer highest casualties in India | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad

SRINAGAR, Dec 20: In India, the J&K police force faces around 60 percent casualties alone while dealing with the law and order problem.
A report of the National Crime Records Bureau reveals that 696 policemen got injured in India while dealing with law and order of which 411 J&K policemen sustained injuries alone in 2015 which comprises of around 60 percent.
The 2015 almost passed off peacefully despite that the police in Jammu and Kashmir especially in the Valley had resorted to lathi charge so many times which is highest in number in India.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have to remain on tenterhooks even during the peaceful times as it had resorted 'lathi charge' 207 times during last year which is highest in India even when there was no unrest in the Valley.
Police across the India used 'lathi charge' 327 times in 2015 of which there were 207 such times when batons were resorted by the cops on protestors in Jammu and Kashmir.
"The police in the Valley have to remain alert to deal with any law and order problem even during peaceful times. Since July 8, police not only had to resort to batons hundreds of times but also used teargas to maintain law and order," a police official said.
However, the official said the JK Police was not "well equipped" to deal properly with law and order problem in the state. "With the implementation of the modernization programme, the police may be better equipped to deal with the protestors," he said.
The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has also criticized J&K government for providing "poor infrastructure and lack of basic facilities for the state police force that needs it the most in the country".
The official said the JK Police had always faced tough times in dealing with the law and order situation. "Even before the unrest, there had been protests in parts of the Valley. The police have to use the lathi charge to ensure law and order is maintained in the state," he said.
Many a times it has been seen that JK Government has to remain dependent on central police forces and the army even when there is a minor law and order problem in the state as it has inadequate police personnel of its own.
Jammu and Kashmir has around 75000 police personnel of which 18000 are deployed as personal security guards of politicians and guarding their homes and properties while only 57000 cops are reserved for dealing with the law and order situation and other responsibilities in the state.
"Now it has been decided to increase its strength to reduce the dependence on central forces and control internal security and law and order situations," a senior official said. |
