Vakil urges CM to proceed against corrupt Ministers
‘Govt should terminate all advocates appointed on basis of political affiliation’
5/19/2010 12:12:08 AM
Ahmed Ali Fayyaz SRINAGAR, May 18: Congress party’s MLC and former Minister Abdul Gani Vakil today complained that a number of the coalition government’s Ministers were neck deep in corruption. While urging Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to ‘rise above the conventional vote bank politics’, Vakil demanded constitution of ‘an independent and credible commission’ which would force the ‘corrupt Ministers and legislators’ to disclose source of their income as quite a number of them, according to him, had acquired thousands of Kanals of prime land and raised palatial bungalows overnight in Srinagar, Jammu and New Delhi. In Take One Television’s current affairs programme ‘Face To Face With Ahmed Ali Fayyaz’, MLC Abdul Gani Vakil expressed full faith in Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s campaign to eradicate corruption but, at the same time, he asserted that it would all prove to be an exercise in futility until the ‘dynamic head of the government’ rose above the (inhibitions of) conventional vote bank politics. “Chief Minister will have to begin from the top. He will have to take dras...

Unemployed youth feel betrayed as authorities engage teachers as enumerators
5/19/2010 12:11:22 AM
MISHU GUPTA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 18: Unemployed educated youth in Jammu and Kashmir who have been awaiting for some odd assignments once again felt betrayed as the state government instead of engaging them for Census 2010 has taken the services of teachers and other government officials. The contention behind this feeling of betrayal is that government are already are being paid salaries and will be paid extra for this out of job duty. 'The Census Department should have engaged the unemployed educated youth in this exercise so that they would get at least a month's honorarium while the teachers and employees of other departments could be used at their routine services," a gro...

Raj Bhawan too has turned Kashmir-centric?
5/19/2010 12:10:53 AM
ET REPORT JAMMU, May 18: The Union Public Service Commission declared the result of Indian Administrative Service examination in the first week of May. As per the available information, not less than seven boys from Jammu and Kashmir cleared this prestigious and highly difficult examination. Three of the boys who cleared the IAS examination belong to Jammu and all of them belong to not-so-economically well off families. They belong to the lower middle class families. It was their hard work and single-minded devotion that saw them through. One of the boys from Kashmir Dr Shah Faisal even topped the list and it happened for the first time. He, too, belongs to rural Kashmir. Ever since the...

BJP's nationalism sham, may compromise on J&K
5/19/2010 12:10:20 AM
RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 18: On the contrary, BJP national spokesperson Tarun Vijay, who visited Srinagar for the first time for party work on May 4, talked of "New Kashmir". His "New Kashmir" formulation, though vague to an extent, did convey the impression that the BJP has been thinking in terms of according a very special status to this part of the country - status the NC or similar other Kashmir-based outfits want on the score of religion. That the BJP has planned to compromise on J&K became quite clear when the then BJP national general secretary did not contest even once those who were demanding for J&K autonomy and self-rule and also directly and indirectly pleading ...

The four day event, for apparent reasons to be hosted in Srinagar in June will have convergence of around 400 delegates from outside the state. Road to famous Mansar lake dotted with "pitfalls" all over
5/19/2010 12:07:18 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 18: The 25-km tarmac road linking Samba to the famous tourist spot of Mansar lake is dotted with pits which make the journey pathetic and exhausting. The drive is not smooth. Half an hour journey takes an hour and a half as pits and "pitfalls", which have come up on almost every part of the road, act as unapparent sources of trouble or danger. Another road, that connects city's peripheral Sidhra area with Mansar, is also in a bad shape ahead of Sruinsar lake, which falls on the way. So, both the roads act as a spoiler for the tourist spot. Some pits are so deep that it looks very risky while negotiating them. The ethusiasm of tourists, or school children...
