Katra, Mar 12: Despite a blanket ban on sale and use of liquor and any other intoxicant in the holy town of Katra, its violation continues with impunity and police have pathetically failed to keep a check on the menace. Sources rued with Early Times that most of the youth is involved in smuggling of liquor into the holy town and its illegal sale, eroding the religious sanctity of the place that is the base camp of one of the most pious seats of reverence in Hindu religion. The sources added saying, "although the Use of liquor and meat is banned in the town, the Holy town Katra is still the highest consumer of liquor in entire district". The menace is being attributed to the callousness of the Police who either do not conduct proper checking at the entry points where the nakkas have been set up are hand in glove with the smugglers. Senior Superintendent of police Reasi, Surjeet Kumar when contacted said that the Security arrangements have been tightened and police were keeping a strict vigil against smuggling of banned material. "Earlier, the liquor smugglers used to board bus to cross the first naka which was put in place to check the light vehicles and thereafter, they used light vehicle and managed to enter katra with liquor. We have now merged both the nakas to check the menace and results are encouraging", He said. |
