Caught between devil and the deep sea, Sajad prefers silence over Masarat's release | | | Peerzada Ummer ET Report SRINAGAR, Mar 12: Separatist turned mainstream politician Sajad Gani Lone's stoic silence over the release of Masarat Alam that created ripples across the country is being watched with lot of interest and attention. The release of Alam stirred hornet's nest in the state with some experts terming it as an initial phase of differences between the coalition partners in Jammu and Kashmir . When 'dreaded man' Masarat Alam, who sponsored the 2010 summer unrest, was released after undergoing 53 months of continuous detention, Sajad was striving to shift from 'insignificant' to the 'significant' portfolio in the newly formed state Cabinet. Sajad unlike others didn't uttered a word over the release of Alam, preferring silence along with his party men. Sources said that the relations of this former separatist with the BJP continue to be sour due to the portfolio accorded to former. Experts are of the opinion that if Sajad opposed the release of Alam, he would indeed make the PDP aghast whose patron is the chief of the state cabinet and if he welcomes the decision of setting Alam free, he would invite BJP's wrath which has been opposing the move since day one. It is not like Sajad wanted to be mute over the issue, he is indeed the most outspoken politician of the state but the timing of situation is different, sources said, adding that the party of this former separatist leader has in unanimity decided not to speak over any contentious issues that could invite trouble. "Sometimes being silent means speaking a lot. Why is our reaction needed over the issue about which all have spoken on top of their voices? Please leave our party out of this controversy," said one of Sajad's party men, adding that the priority of Peoples' Conference (PC) will be to serve people with best of the abilities and not to strike controversial statements. However, sources divulged that back channel talks between the BJP leadership and Sajad Lone continue with the later wanting change in his portfolio. Though the BJP leadership has assured Sajad that in the next cabinet expansion, the needful will be done, Sajad is reluctant in accepting BJP's offer. He reportedly has said that he would not join his office until some concrete measure is taken by the party so that a 'deserving' portfolio is given to him. The PC chairman was given Science and Technology and Animal Husbandry. Reportedly he was striving for Home affairs or Tourism which the Chief Minister retained with himself. |
