Rescue team recovers body from avalanche debris, hunt on | | | S Tahir-ul-Haq

Kupwara, Mar 12: During the ongoing search cum rescue operation in Tangdhar of Kupwara, the joint team of Jammu and Kashmir police and Army today found a body of one of the two persons who went missing on March 9 when the area witnessed heavy snowfall. Meanwhile the hunt is on to trace the second person. The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Shareef (21) s/o Late Alam-Ud Din of Bayadi- Tangdhar. According to official sources that we received information about the two missing youth, who had left Kupwara town on March 9, after snow avalanches hit the particular area at many places during inclement weather. An official said, "The two unfortunate who went missing were among the group of five people of Tangdhar who had left Kupwara town on March 9 and three of them had made safely to their places but the two got stranded between Sadna Top and Tangdhar area.""The duo has been identified namely as Sadam Muneer S/O Muneer Ahmad Sheikh R/O Tangdhar, Mohammad Shareef S/O Late Alam Ud-Din R/O Bayadi, official added.Official said that soon after the missing report about the duo, a massive rescue cum search operation in the area, but due to snow slides and avalanches at various places pace of operation got hindered. "Today morning when the search team was reinforced by the active assistance from Army, Police and locals guides, the body of one of the two missing was found at Khooni Nallah about 6 kms from Sadna Top on Thursday afternoon, he said. "After completion of legal formalities, the rescue team/police handed over the body to the family members for last rites, he said adding, "we (rescue team) will resume operation to trace another missing local of Tangdhar Friday morning."As per locals of Tangdhar that Sadna Top is infamous as Nastachun (broken nose or cut nose). This pass is in the lap of Shamsbari Mountain, which is at a height of 10273 ft and connects Karnah valley with Kupwara by a vehicular road. Locals also believe that before 1947 this was an easy and shortest approach for the residents of the district for going to Muzaferabad in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) but the pass remains mostly closed from December to April due to snow avalanches. |
