NC welcomes unity among Hurriyat leaders

Early Times Report

Srinagar, July 12: The Opposition National Conference has welcomed unity among Hurriyat leaders exposing its inclination towards anti-national elements in the state.
"Whatever your political ideology, unity among Hurriyat leaders is to be welcomed and encouraged," the NC spokesman Junaid Azim Mattoo posted on his Facebook page.
The NC leader also posted the joint picture of Syed Ali Geelani, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at Iftaar party hosted by Geelani at his Hyder Pora residence, where the separatists passed another anti-national resolution. The separatists have threatened to launch massive street protests against the ruling PDP-BJP coalition.
Political analysts said the NC wants to cash the separatist unity and their protest programs to fuel hatred against the ruling coalition among general masses. "It is simple if the separatists succeed in their protest programs the beneficiary on the mainstream front has to be National Conference," said a senior journalist tracking the developments.
But National Conference has often been about doublespeak. Even though to be in power the NC leaders from Kashmir often try to be "truly Indian", they are often seen as having deep rooted connections with separatist leaders and militants alike.
NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah seems to be the leader on this front. As anecdote on him goes about the 1999 Kargil war, Abdullah as the then Chief Minister gave a fiery speech stating that atomic bomb be dropped on Pakistan.
But there was an instant twist in his conviction. It is alleged that the moment he got into his motorcade he started praising Pakistan and abusing India before his colleagues and escort from Jammu and Kashmir Police who were accompanying him. "Piaya Hindustanas Trath (May cloudburst hit India)," Farooq had allegedly quipped.
Though subsequently aspiring to be the Vice President of India, Dr Abdullah tried to be more loyal than the King before New Delhi, his dream couldn't be fulfilled as his doublespeak was by and large exposed.
Former RAW Chief Amarjit Singh Dulat in his recent memoir said the New Delhi doesn't trust Abdullahs. Some years ago when out of power Omar Abdullah had visited Pakistan to have a word with then President Parvaiz Musharraf.
Other National Conference leaders like Ali Mohammed Sagar and Shamima Firdous are often accused of harboring former militants of downtown. Sagar is accused of using their services to fuel streets protests as and when needed by his party.
Police says in 2008 the NC activists alongside separatists were on the forefront of Amarnath land row. "We had complaints that NC leaders played a major role in polarization of Jammu and Kashmir on communal lines during the Amarnath land row only to get back to power," said a senior official who was then posted in Srinagar.
Observes opine that this time again the ruling National Conference wants to cash the separatist sentiment to get back to power.
