Chairman of hard-line faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani continues to be under house arrest. Some other members of the conglomerate have also been either arrested or put under house arrest. These include Ayaz Akbar and Raja Mehraj-ud-din. Another separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah has also been put under house arrest at his Sanat Nagar residence. Separatist leader Engineer Hilal Ahmad War has gone into hiding after police raided his residence and office during the preceding night. The crackdown against separatist leaders comes close on heels of their proposed joint programme in connection with the observance of the Martyrs Day in the summer capital of the state on July 13. The separatist leaders had planned to carry out a rally towards the Matyrs Graveyard located in the Khawaja Bazar area of downtown Srinagar from Jamia Masjid. Separatist leaders Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik had planned to offer the noon prayers at Jamia Masjid and after that they were expected to lead a rally towards the Martyrs Graveyard located inside the shrine of Naqashbandh Sahib. It would have been after a long time that the top notch separatist leaders would carry out a joint rally. The programme was framed following invitation by Mirwaiz to Geelani and Malik to have a joint programme in connection with Martyrs Day. However, early in the morning today a huge posse of police appeared at the Nigeen residence of Mirwaiz and informed him that he has been put under house arrest. At the same time a huge group of police personnel came to the Maisuma residence of Malik and he too was informed that he is under house arrest. Geelani continues to be under house arrest and he is even denied to offer the congregational Friday prayers. On Saturday (July 11) Mirwaiz and Malik along with many other separatist leaders attended the Iftaar party hosted by Geelani at his residence. The separatist leaders threatened to carry out an agitation across the Kashmir valley in case the prisoners are not released before Eid-ul-Fitr. They accused the police of arresting youth and minors on the pretext that they are involved in stone throwing incidents in the valley. In the meantime, spokesmen of Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front and moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference have strongly condemned the police action of putting Malik and Mirwaiz under house arrest. In separate statements, the spokesman while castigating the police action said that state machinery wants to muzzle the voice of the separatist thought in the Kashmir valley. n NDRF men rescuing people who trapped in flood waters in Aru in Pahalgam of Anantnag district. |
