July 13 to be low key affair this year | Maharaja not an oppressor, separatists desperate to foment trouble | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 12: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) having different ideologies have different takes over observing July 13 as Martyrs day in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP has made it clear that it doesn't believe that July 13 is Martyrs day. The party has demanded thorough probe of July 13, 1931 killings. Every year government celebrates the July 13 as Martyrs day and on that day chief minister of the state visit the "martyrs graveyard" in old city to pay floral tributes to the people who died on this day in 1931. A BJP leader said that BJP as a party has never accepted martyrs day in Kashmir. "Party and government have different ideologies. It was questionable whether the 22 Kashmiris who were killed by forces were martyrs or not. We want a comprehensive discussion on this subject. We should know the definition of those martyrs. You can't call people dying in an incident as martyrs. So, a deliberation is must on this issue," the leader added. He said that it's absurd to call a man (Dogra Maharaja) an oppressor. He was certainly an upright person. "July 13 is creation of the National Conference who projected the Maharaja in bad light," the leader added. As the coalition partners in Jammu and Kashmir have completely different stands over July 13, separatists are trying their best to take the advantage of the situation. In the past separatists usually used to visit the graveyard in old city separately to show their strength but this year they have put up a united face and have announced a joint programme wherein, Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Hurriyat dove, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and militant turned so-called Ahinsavadi the JKLF Chief Yasin Malik have announced that they would lead a joint protest march. On the other hand opposition National Conference has taken potshots on the PDP due to BJP making it clear that its ministers won't visit the graveyard and July 13 is no "Martyrs day." Sources told Early Times that a few PDP ministers would accompany the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed early in the morning on Monday to pay the floral tributes at the graveyard and after that strict restrictions would be put in place in the area to thwart the plan of the separatists to hold a joint rally. "We have got the inputs that separatists have planned a major show of strength and could go to any extent to foment trouble," said a source. He added that this time around July 13 would be a low profile affair and none of the mainstream political parties would be allowed to indulge in "chest thumping." Asked would authorities allow the NC and leaders of other political parties to visit the graveyard on Monday, the source evaded the query saying, "We don't want to take any chances in wake of ongoing Amarnath Yatra and Eid-ul-Fitr. We want to ensure that peace prevails." Pertinently, Police on late Sunday afternoon placed Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik under house arrest and a massive crackdown has been launched to trace the people who could orchestrate the street protests. |
